Bathroom Day 11

Back Home Up Next

12/29/99: Is there a word for beyond tired? We got the sub-floor in today. It isn't nailed down but it's a snug fit and it took all day to get there. We installed more blocking, finishing that job finally. Ro and I planed down the old blocking, it was higher than the joists. No wonder the floor squeaked! Then it was time to install the sub floor.  Measured twice, cut holes for the toilet and shower drains into the sub floor, and cut the panel to size (4' by just under 8')   The first time in it wedged in between the walls before it was down on the floor. It was just a teensy bit too long in a couple of places. It was a major pain in the ass to get it back out. We used crowbars levers and wedges and backs and knees to get it out. All through the "wedgie" process, we were being very careful not to trash the house or the floorboard. After a little trimming with a block plane and some incentive from a hammer, the sub floor went into place. I wanted to take a hot shower but the pressure change caused by sealing up the big hole in our floor blew out the pilot of the water heater. I'm waiting for it to heat up.

That circle in the center of the picture is
a 1999 penny. It will be encased under the floor.
I remember my father doing that in
his projects and I carry on the tradition.

This shows the new blocking, the old blocking has
been planed level with the joists.

The new sub-floor is in, nice and snug.
